I should have posted this review closer to the date that I tried Houghton's for the first time, but I am now just getting around to it. It wasn't long ago, there was snow on the ground, so within the last couple of months. I had seen ads for Houghton's on TV and their pizza looked amazing! One Saturday, I talked my husband into going there and trying it. We are always looking for a good pizza joint. Let's just say our experience was neither really good nor really bad, it was "interesting". We arrived mid-afternoon and entered into the dining area. We were told to pick our seats and someone would be with us shortly. We sat down and waited and waited. We waited long enough that I was ready to get up and leave. But finally, someone came with menus and took our drink order. By the time she was back, we were ready to order. We went there set on pizza. When we ordered, our waitress had to ask whether or not they served pizza on Saturday. She came back with, "since we have a dishwasher on Saturdays now, we do serve pizza". Confused by the statement, we continued with our order. I can see a pizza oven being crucial to making pizzas, but a dishwasher? Why wouldn't a restaurant have a dishwasher every day of the week? With our pizza, we ordered a sampler basket. When asked if we would like ranch with it, we declined. Neither one of us like ranch dressing, not even on salads. But we weren't asked just this once, we were repeatedly asked. Even with our pizza! As we sat, eating our pizza, out waitress was helping another table within earshot of us. She explained to them that when she asked us if we wanted ranch, we "looked at her like she was from outer space". It wasn't necessarily rude of her to say, just surprising that she would say it within hearing distance of us. But, the food was good. It was more the whole experience, that wasn't all that great. I can't honestly say that I would return, but there is a full menu that might be worth looking at again. We'll see if we're ever in the area again to give it a chance.
Thank you for a delicious lunch and great dining experience. I had the ultimate burger and fries. It lived up to it's name. The meat was juicy and flavorful, the bun was buttery and soft and the fries were golden and crisp. This is my new favorite burger in La Crosse. On top of a fantastic meal the service was excellent and the staff was as friendly as could be. The hostess even helped calm our young son down so we could enjoy our meal. I highly recommend Houghton's.
